Dark Energy
Every month or so, the Twin Cities’ tight-knit techno, goth, and new/synth/cold-wave scenes come together to dance the pain away at Grant Mayland’s Dark Energy party. Launched in early 2016 by the California-born, Minneapolis-raised DJ/promoter, the underground hub draws a diverse crowd of young and old revelers.
Long held at Kitty Cat Klub, Dark Energy recently moved a few doors down to Dinkytown’s Loring Bar & Restaurant. Which sounds a little strange on paper—the restaurant normally hosts weddings, galas, and corporate gatherings—but works out well once the sun goes down, the mood lighting kicks in, and its soaring ceilings, fake trees, and wide open spaces take on fantastical undertones. Vampire’s Ball & Halloween Party are staples at Dark Energy.

12 Vultures
This store hosts goth nights and bands frequently in Minnesota. My vision for the store stems from my own experiences. Especially those that involve discovering new places or things that were unexpected or completely different from what was my “normal”. I want the store to be a place of discovery and hopefully some inspiration to decorate or create a little different than most.
I source items from all over the world and from a variety trusted vendors. I work mainly with private collectors who, like myself, are constantly buying, selling and sometimes keeping various treasures. Other ways I find things include: foraging, auction, antique/vintage stores, and the occasional estate/garage sale.
Zhora Darling
The pandemic was hard on the entire restaurant industry, and the comeback has happened in fits and starts. But one experiential segment in particular has seemed extra tardy in its return: the cool, not-so-divey bar with good food and a kitchen that stays open late. Too many times to count over the last couple of years, I’ve gotten out of a ballgame or a concert after 10 p.m. only to find barely anyone serving good food that late in the entire city. The two biggest challenges to doing late night dining again seem to be finding staff willing to work late, and then, even if you can, the uncertainty that people will show up late enough, regularly enough, to justify it. So now our late-night dining is trapped in a doom loop, and we need somebody either brave enough or foolish enough or just committed enough to reverse the trend. Well, my city people, a couple of New Yorkers are opening up a new spot, Zhora Darling, on 1st Ave. NE, in the space that used to house Red Stag Supperclub, and they swear their kitchen is going to stay open until 1 a.m.
